West End Cultural Centre has had a compost program for cups, paper towels, coffee and food scraps for a while now and we feel lucky they have chosen us to pick-up their compostable waste. Over 3,000 pounds of organic waste collected during friendly competition
Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 20, 2016 — The winners of the inaugural Compost Winnipeg Downtown Challenge have been announced. The Most Enthusiastic Team is HTFC Planning and Design; the Best Compost Champion is Ryan Epp of ft3; the Heavyweight Champion is University of Manitoba’s Dining Services at the Bannatyne Campus; and the draw prize winner is Alara Matsyk of Prairie Architects.
The Downtown Challenge was a friendly composting competition for registered offices and organizations in the downtown area. Twenty-two participating locations were set up with compost bins on Earth Day, and Compost Winnipeg staff weighed and collected the organic waste at each location for two weeks.

Face-off to divert organic waste begins on Earth Day
Winnipeg, Manitoba, April 18, 2016 — The inaugural Compost Winnipeg Downtown Challenge begins this Friday in celebration of Earth Day, and concludes on May 7, the final day of International Compost Awareness Week. The two-week Challenge, hosted by Green Action Centre’s new social enterprise, is a friendly waste-reduction competition for businesses and organizations in the downtown area.
By the end of the Challenge, Compost Winnipeg’s goal is to reach 15,000 pounds of organic waste diverted from the landfill since their start-up in August. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day and International Compost Awareness Week,” says Compost Winnipeg’s Project Manager Kelly Kuryk. “I am a compost enthusiast and I wanted to do something to put composting in a positive light.”

Green Action Centre announces launch of new social enterprise
Winnipeg, Manitoba, March 30, 2016 — Green Action Centre is pleased to announce the official launch of Compost Winnipeg, a new social enterprise that enables Winnipeggers to green their garbage. Businesses in the downtown area are invited to participate in the Compost Winnipeg Downtown Challenge, which begins on Earth Day (April 22), and ends with the conclusion of International Compost Awareness Week (May 7).
During the two-week Challenge, Compost Winnipeg will track the weight of organic waste collected from registered Challenge participants. All new and existing clients of Compost Winnipeg will automatically be registered for the challenge. Other offices in the downtown area can also participate by registering online.
