Green Action Centre announces launch of new social enterprise
Winnipeg, Manitoba, March 30, 2016 — Green Action Centre is pleased to announce the official launch of Compost Winnipeg, a new social enterprise that enables Winnipeggers to green their garbage. Businesses in the downtown area are invited to participate in the Compost Winnipeg Downtown Challenge, which begins on Earth Day (April 22), and ends with the conclusion of International Compost Awareness Week (May 7).
During the two-week Challenge, Compost Winnipeg will track the weight of organic waste collected from registered Challenge participants. All new and existing clients of Compost Winnipeg will automatically be registered for the challenge. Other offices in the downtown area can also participate by registering online.
“People are often hesitant to start composting in the workplace,” remarks Kelly Kuryk, Project Manager for Compost Winnipeg. “This Challenge gives them the opportunity to start composting with a minimal level of commitment,” she says, adding, “I’d love to get every office in the downtown composting!” Prizes will be awarded for best compost champion, most enthusiastic team, and most waste diverted. Participants will also be entered into a draw for an eco-everything deluxe gardening package.
Green Action Centre is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with a mandate to help Manitobans live green and live well – at home, at work, at school and in the community. With an impressive 31-year history, the Centre began looking at the social enterprise model in 2013. “Focusing on waste diversion in the workplace was a natural fit for us as we already provide community composting education to schools and residents,” states the Centre’s Executive Director, Tracy Hucul.
Since their start this fall, Compost Winnipeg staff have collected and diverted nearly 12,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill—and that’s with fewer than a dozen clients. The goal of the Challenge is to reach a total weight of 15,000 pounds of organics collected by Compost Winnipeg by the end of International Compost Awareness Week. Offices are encouraged to sign up prior to Earth Day to give their team a head start on practicing their composting skills. Stay tuned for future announcements of Compost Winnipeg’s inaugural Compost Champions!
