Earth Day Every Day

MEDIA RELEASE

21 April 2017 (Winnipeg): Compost Winnipeg makes every day Earth Day!

Yesterday, Compost Winnipeg - a social enterprise of Green Action Centre - showcased their love of compost and their work collecting organic waste that would otherwise end up in Winnipeg’s landfill. Every week, Compost Winnipeg staff pick up organic waste from businesses and residents around the city, and turn food scraps into compost. The pick-up service is tailored to those who do not have the time, space or ability to compost onsite.

To celebrate Earth Day, held annually on April 22, Compost Winnipeg is highlighting the weight of food waste captured during a regular day of their organic waste pick up. On this day, Compost Winnipeg picked up 840kg of compost, and since its launch last spring has captured over 80,500kg that would otherwise find its way to the landfill. This is equivalent to 1,905kgs of methane avoided, which is a greenhouse gas roughly 30 times more potent than Carbon Dioxide. This means that the amount of methane captured by Compost Winnipeg is equivalent to over 47,000kg of CO2, and the total corresponding GHG emissions reduced in methane by Compost Winnipeg is equivalent to driving an average passenger vehicle around the Earth 4.5 times.

Green Action Centre is pleased with the enthusiastic response to Compost Winnipeg from businesses and residents across the city who want to do something about climate change. The momentum for composting in Winnipeg is growing - since its launch in April 2016, Compost Winnipeg has signed up 30 commercial clients, and since launching its residential service in January 2017, the social enterprise is collecting from over 150 residences across the city, with many more on a wait list.

Background: Compost Winnipeg started with a desire by Green Action Centre to expand its impact through social enterprise. After completing a feasibility study and business plan supported by Enterprising Non-Profits Manitoba and SEED Winnipeg, Compost Winnipeg was launched in April 2016. Green Action Centre also provides composting education and free public presentations on backyard and vermi-composting.
