Green Action Centre's Compost Winnipeg & Councillor Mayes Partner for School Composting

Winnipeg, Manitoba, December 21, 2017 -- Compost Winnipeg and St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes invite schools to start thinking about a green resolution for the New Year: Compost. Thanks to support from Coun. Mayes, Compost Winnipeg will provide two Winnipeg schools with composting services from January to June 2018, including compost education, supplies, and food scraps pick-up.

“I am contacted regularly by schools. Kids, teachers and parents want to see their schools composting but they rarely have a budget to take it beyond the discussion phase.” Says Kelly Kuryk, Project Manager for Compost Winnipeg. “Funding by Councillor Mayes will enable us to sponsor 2 schools to pilot a compost collection program. I am really excited – I hope we get lots of schools applying and can later expand the service!”

“I have been impressed by Compost Winnipeg’s work and wanted to assist them with  increasing their community based services that benefit our youth,” says Mayes, whose financial assistance is covering the cost of training, supplies and compost pick-up for the 2 selected schools. “I hope it sparks discussion among staff, students and teachers, and ideally reduces school waste while inspiring new environmental leaders.”

Since launched in 2016, Compost Winnipeg (A social enterprise of Green Action Centre) has diverted 237,000 kilograms of compostable waste from the landfill. “When you compare that to Greenhouse Gas Emissions, it’s the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road for one day.” says Kuryk.

Interested teachers, students, administrators or parents are encouraged go to for more information. Applications are being accepted until Friday, January 12th.  Selected schools will be announced on Wednesday January 17th.
